Political Tensions Escalate: BNP-Jamaat Clash Alleged

A tense political confrontation unfolded in Chapainawabganj Sadar Upazila on Sunday evening, when conflicting claims emerged regarding an alleged clash between supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami and a convoy carrying BNP parliamentary candidate Harunur Rashid. The incident reportedly occurred in the Menipara area and involved accusations of vehicle collisions, torn campaign banners, and physical altercations.

According to Harunur Rashid, he was travelling in a microbus for election campaigning at around 7:30 pm when his vehicle encountered a procession organised by Jamaat-e-Islami in the Menipara area of the municipality. “Even though the microbus was stationary by the roadside to allow the procession to pass, some Jamaat supporters repeatedly bumped the vehicle and tore off the banners attached to it,” he claimed. “Most of those involved appeared to be teenagers and not registered voters.”

Harunur Rashid’s son, Rubaiyat Ibne Harun Rafi, reportedly alighted from the microbus and intervened, urging the procession’s participants to move aside. Rashid condemned the incident as “politically uncivil and provocative behaviour, entirely unacceptable in a democratic electoral environment.”

Conversely, the Chapainawabganj district branch of Jamaat-e-Islami issued a joint statement accusing Rubaiyat of attacking their district leader Azizul Haque Noor. The party described the incident as a “demonstration of brute force that severely undermines the electoral environment.” Jamaat has demanded the arrest of Rubaiyat and his associates, and called for exemplary punishment. They also held a protest march later in the evening to voice their objections.

Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Md. Noore Alam, confirmed that no formal complaints have yet been filed. He stated, “Should any party submit a complaint, legal action will be taken in accordance with the law.”

The following table summarises the competing allegations:

This episode has highlighted the rising political heat in Chapainawabganj ahead of the elections, drawing concern and debate among local voters. Observers suggest that such confrontations, if unchecked, could threaten the atmosphere of peaceful and fair campaigning in the region.Political Tensions Escalate: BNP-Jamaat Clash Alleged
