Australia’s cricketing legend Ricky Ponting has predicted that India’s young opener, Abhishek Sharma, could emerge as the highest run-scorer in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. According to Ponting, Sharma is not just a potential match-winner but possesses the calibre to shape the course of the entire tournament.
Speaking at an ICC review event, Ponting remarked, “Abhishek’s relatively limited experience on the international stage could actually work in his favour. It allows him to play fearlessly, without the burden of expectation, which can make all the difference in the T20 format.”
Ponting added, “Abhishek is a star in the making. He has the ability to top the scoring charts and could even be a strong contender for Player of the Tournament. I see him as a cricketer of that calibre. If he performs to his potential, India will be extremely difficult to beat. Conversely, if he doesn’t, India could be as vulnerable as any other team in the competition.”
The 2018 U-19 World Cup-winning member has already begun to make his mark in international T20 cricket. In 37 T20I matches to date, Sharma has amassed 1,267 runs at an impressive strike rate of nearly 195, underscoring his destructive batting ability.
Ponting, who worked closely with Sharma during his tenure as coach of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, recalled noticing something extraordinary in the young batsman from the very beginning. He believes Sharma is now poised to translate that potential onto the global stage.
Sharma has been in scintillating form leading into the World Cup, scoring 182 runs across five matches in India’s recently concluded T20 series against New Zealand. His performances suggest he is not only ready to handle the pressures of the big stage but also capable of turning games single-handedly.
| Matches | Runs | Strike Rate | 50s/100s | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 37 | 1,267 | 194.7 | 9/2 | Explosive opener, U-19 World Cup winner |
With the T20 World Cup just around the corner, all eyes will be on Sharma as he seeks to combine youthful exuberance with the destructive firepower that has become his hallmark. If he replicates his IPL and recent international form, he could well be the defining player of the tournament.
