MI Emirates confirmed their place in the ILT20 playoffs with a commanding eight-wicket win over the Gulf Giants at Abu Dhabi, thanks to a sensational partnership between Nicholas Pooran and Muhammad Waseem. The unbeaten 140-run stand for the third wicket, coupled with a disciplined bowling effort, proved decisive as MI Emirates (MIE) cruised past a total of 141 set by the Giants.
The Gulf Giants, meanwhile, remain in disarray, having now lost six of their last seven matches. Their playoff hopes hinge on a must-win clash against Abu Dhabi Knight Riders.
Giants Struggle Early Despite Explosive Start
Electing to bat first, the Giants got off to a flier as Rahmanullah Gurbaz smashed a six and a four in quick succession. However, his innings was cut short when Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled him in the third over. Captain James Vince soon followed, dismissed by Romario Shepherd, leaving the Giants precariously placed at 16 for 2. Asif Khan offered brief resistance, striking a six and a four before succumbing to Shepherd, ending the PowerPlay at 36 for 3.
Middle overs saw little relief for the Giants, who managed only 55 runs from overs 7 to 15, unable to establish momentum. Moeen Ali and Kyle Mayers revived the innings in the final five overs, launching a late assault on MIE’s bowlers. Moeen reached his fifty off 45 balls, and the pair’s late flourish propelled the Giants to a competitive 141 for 6.
MIE Chase Anchored by Pooran-Waseem Partnership
The chase began on a wobbly note. Mark Adair trapped Jonny Bairstow LBW for a duck, though ball-tracking suggested a miss, and Tom Banton was dismissed by Azmatullah Omarzai. MI Emirates found themselves 2 for 2, bringing Pooran and Waseem together early.
Waseem dominated initially, punishing anything loose, while Pooran struggled to find rhythm. By the 12th over, Pooran accelerated, smashing three consecutive boundaries to reach his first fifty of the season and lift the partnership past 100. Waseem’s attacking approach continued, reaching his fifty with ease. Pooran then unleashed back-to-back sixes in the 17th over, sealing the victory in style with a few balls to spare.
