VATICAN CITY, 9 March 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Pope Francis spent a peaceful night in hospital, the Vatican confirmed on Sunday, as the 88-year-old Pontiff continues to respond well to treatment for pneumonia.
“The night was calm, and the Pope is resting,” the Vatican stated in a morning update regarding the Argentine leader of the Catholic Church, who has been receiving care in a special papal suite at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since 14 February.
Francis has experienced several respiratory difficulties since his admission, but none have occurred in recent days, with the Vatican describing his condition as “stable.”
On Saturday, officials reported that the Pope was responding positively to treatment and had shown “a gradual, slight improvement.”
Although Francis is not experiencing fever, his doctors remain cautious, stressing that they want to observe continued progress “in the coming days” before providing a definitive prognosis.
The Pope has faced numerous health challenges in recent years, including colon surgery in 2021 and a hernia operation in 2023. However, this hospitalisation has been the longest and most serious of his papacy.
During previous hospital stays at the Gemelli, Francis has appeared on a balcony to deliver his weekly Sunday Angelus prayer. However, he has been unable to do so for the past three Sundays and is set to miss a fourth this week. The Vatican press office confirmed that this Sunday’s Angelus would be delivered “in the same manner” as in recent weeks, meaning it will be published as a letter at noon.
Background Context:
Pope Francis, known for his emphasis on humility, social justice, and interfaith dialogue, has led the Catholic Church since 2013. Despite his health struggles, he has maintained a demanding schedule, frequently travelling and engaging in global diplomatic efforts.
The Vatican’s decision to be transparent about his health contrasts with historical precedents, as previous popes often had their ailments concealed from the public. Given his recent hospitalisation, discussions about the possibility of Francis resigning—following the example of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI—have resurfaced. However, Vatican officials have so far dismissed such speculation, reiterating that Francis remains committed to his role.
