Pope Leo XIV presided over a monumental mass in Rome on Sunday, bringing to a close the week-long Jubilee of Youth, a historic pilgrimage that gathered over one million young Catholics from across the globe.

Papal Message to the Youth

During his homily, Pope Leo urged young pilgrims not to settle for mediocrity:

“Aspire to great things, to holiness, wherever you are. Do not settle for less.”

As the first American pope and a former missionary, Leo called on the youth to:

“Spread your enthusiasm and the witness of your faith to everyone you meet!”

Saturday Night Vigil

A major highlight of the pilgrimage was the twilight vigil on Saturday, where Pope Leo arrived via helicopter to a thunderous welcome. As he toured the grounds in his popemobile, thousands ran to catch a glimpse of the charismatic new pontiff.

Italian broadcaster Rai dubbed the spectacle a “Catholic Woodstock”, as the air filled with music, song, and joy. Youths camped overnight under open skies, with many strumming guitars, singing hymns, and joining spontaneous prayer circles.

Quote from attendee:

“I’m so happy to be here, even if I’m a bit far from the pope. I knew what to expect! The main thing is that we’re all together.”
— Andy Hewellyn, British student

Support for War-Torn Regions

In his Sunday Angelus, Pope Leo spoke in English, expressing solidarity with youth from conflict zones:

“We are with the young people of Gaza. We are with the young people of Ukraine, with those of every land bloodied by war.”

He continued:

“My young brothers and sisters, you are the sign that a different world is possible—a world of fraternity and friendship where conflicts are not resolved with weapons but with dialogue.”

The Vatican placed special emphasis on highlighting pilgrims who managed to attend from war-ravaged nations, describing their presence as a symbol of hope and courage.

Throughout the week, the Vatican transformed ancient Roman sites into spiritual venues. The Circus Maximus, once home to Roman chariot races, was repurposed for open-air confessionals—bridging history with faith in a powerful gesture

Atmosphere and Celebration

The final mass, held under clear skies, was accompanied by a large choir, with clergy dressed in vibrant green vestments. A towering cross rose above the stage, becoming the centrepiece of a scene filled with unity, prayer, and celebration.

The streets of Rome buzzed all week with young pilgrims chanting, singing, and waving national flags, making the Eternal City a living mosaic of global Catholic youth.

Legacy of the Gathering

The 2025 Jubilee of Youth marked not only a spiritual milestone but also a new chapter for the Catholic Church under Pope Leo XIV. By uniting more than a million young believers in the heart of Rome, the Church reaffirmed its commitment to a future built on faith, peace, and global fraternity.
