Portugal PM Hints at Confidence Vote Amid Conflict of Interest Allegations

LISBON, 2 March 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro on Saturday did not rule out the possibility of seeking a vote of confidence, as he denied any wrongdoing in an alleged conflict of interest scandal involving his family business.

The conservative leader, who assumed office just last year, urged the heavily fragmented parliament to provide a clear stance on whether his minority government should remain in power.

“Without a clear response, political clarification would only be possible through a vote of confidence,” he stated in a televised address to the nation following an emergency cabinet meeting.

Montenegro also stressed that he would not hold onto his position “at any cost,” implying that his future as prime minister would depend on the political consensus within the parliament.

Allegations and Response

The controversy erupted earlier this week after reports in the Portuguese media alleged that a company operated by Montenegro’s wife and children had business links with the Solverde casino and hotel group. The family business reportedly secured a contract worth €4,500 (£3,840) per month from July 2021 to provide Solverde with personal data handling services.

Responding to the allegations, Montenegro insisted that he had not engaged in any unlawful activity and maintained that he had upheld ethical standards.

“I have committed no crime, nor have I ever compromised ethical principles. I have never placed private interests above the public interest,” he declared.

In an effort to defuse the situation, Montenegro announced that his family business would now be “entirely owned and managed by my children,” effectively distancing himself from its operations.

Political Fallout

The allegations have triggered strong reactions across Portugal’s political spectrum. The far-right Chega party, now the third-largest force in parliament, deemed it “impossible to allow the continuation of a government under such serious suspicion.”

Several smaller far-left parties, including the Communist Party, expressed their lack of confidence in Montenegro’s leadership, with the Communists vowing to submit a motion of no confidence against his government.

The main opposition Socialist Party, however, ruled out supporting the Communist Party’s motion. Nevertheless, its secretary-general, Pedro Nuno Santos, demanded further clarifications on the matter, stating that “transparency is owed to all Portuguese citizens.”

Economic Considerations

Montenegro has warned against plunging the country into a political crisis, arguing that his government has overseen positive economic developments. Portugal has recently reported stable economic growth, declining unemployment rates, and increased foreign investment under his leadership.

As the political storm continues to unfold, the fate of Montenegro’s administration now hinges on whether parliament will support him or force him into a confidence vote that could reshape Portugal’s political landscape.
