The Legal Adviser of Bangladesh’s Interim Government, Asif Nazrul, has confirmed that the transfer of power to the newly elected government will take place between 17 and 18 February, ahead of the commencement of Ramadan. He made the remarks on Thursday (12 February) after casting his vote at the Siddheshwari Girls’ College polling station in Dhaka-8, under the jurisdiction of Ramna Police Station.
Addressing reporters, Mr Nazrul emphasised the historic significance of the current election. “For decades, generations of Bangladeshis were deprived of their fundamental voting rights. Today, our young citizens and students have reclaimed this right through persistent struggle and selfless sacrifices,” he said.
He underlined that this election is far from ordinary, describing it as “a tribute to those who made sacrifices last July. This vote is a continuation of their spirit and a reaffirmation of our democratic values.”
Regarding the voting environment, Mr Nazrul noted that polling centres across the country were experiencing a festive and orderly atmosphere, despite a few isolated incidents which he described as minor and not reflective of Bangladesh’s electoral culture. “The enthusiasm and discipline of the voters are evident everywhere,” he added.
Authorities have taken extensive measures to ensure a smooth and secure election. Security personnel, electoral officials, and volunteers have been deployed nationwide to maintain order, assist voters, and safeguard the integrity of the process.
The following table summarises key information regarding the election and upcoming power transition:

Mr Nazrul further stressed the importance of the election in strengthening Bangladesh’s democratic framework. “Beyond selecting a government, this election represents the revitalisation of citizens’ faith in democracy. It is a reaffirmation that the people’s voice is paramount and that their vote will shape the country’s future.”
He extended gratitude to the electorate for actively participating, noting that voter engagement reflects the maturity and responsibility of the nation. “This process will guide Bangladesh toward stability, development, and a peaceful political transition,” he added.
In summary, Mr Nazrul’s statements underscore that Bangladesh is set to witness a peaceful transfer of power before Ramadan, marking both a symbolic and practical reinforcement of democratic governance in the country.
