Prime Minister to Inaugurate Dinajpur Canal Excavation On 16th March

The Prime Minister, Tarek Rahman, is scheduled to inaugurate a significant canal excavation project in Dinajpur’s Kaharol Upazila on 16 March, as part of the nationwide initiative to restore and dredge rivers, canals, and reservoirs. The project, spanning approximately 12.5 kilometres, will take place in the Balrampur Sahapara area, marking a major step towards addressing local water management challenges.

Speaking to journalists during an inspection of the site on Sunday, Minister of Water Resources Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie emphasised the government’s commitment to revitalising water infrastructure. He noted that the Balrampur Sahapara canal, long obstructed by sediment and encroachments, will soon be restored to improve water flow and alleviate flooding in the area.

“We have prioritised the excavation and restoration of canals and waterways across the country. Through the reopening of the Sahapara canal, we aim to benefit local communities by reducing waterlogging and providing a reliable source for irrigation. Farmers will see a marked improvement in crop yields,” Minister Annie stated.

The minister also highlighted the long-standing challenges that had impeded canal maintenance. Over the years, sediment accumulation, unplanned construction, and commercial developments along waterways have obstructed water flow in several regions. The new initiative seeks to remove these barriers, requiring cooperation from local residents and stakeholders to ensure smooth progress.

A key component of the project is maintaining transparency and accountability. Minister Annie assured that the excavation will be conducted in a fully responsible and public-interest-oriented manner, with strict measures to prevent any corruption or malpractice. “The work will be carried out with complete diligence, and every effort will be made to ensure the benefits reach the people,” he affirmed.
