Prisoner Dies Suddenly at Keraniganj Jail

A 35-year-old prisoner, Md. Rashed, has died after falling seriously ill at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj. The incident occurred on Wednesday, 10 December, in the late afternoon. Prison authorities rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 3:45 pm, where attending doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

According to prison officer Md. Sujan, Rashed suddenly became unwell around midday. Following standard protocol, the jail authorities immediately arranged for his transfer to DMCH. Unfortunately, he did not survive the emergency.

Md. Rashed was serving a sentence under the Drug Control Act 36(1)20-c in connection with a case filed at Motijheel Police Station (Case No. 10(2)22). His prison identification number was 755/A. His father’s name is Golam Rabbani.

MD. Faruk, officer-in-charge of the DMCH hospital police camp, confirmed the death and stated that the body has been kept in the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. The jail authorities have been formally notified.

A post-mortem will be conducted in the presence of an executive magistrate, and the report will be prepared before the body is handed over to the family. Authorities emphasised that a proper investigation into the circumstances surrounding Rashed’s sudden death is underway, reflecting growing concerns over prisoner health management in overcrowded jails.

The incident has sparked questions about the adequacy of medical care within prisons, with human rights activists calling for stricter health monitoring and rapid response measures to prevent future tragedies.
