In Madaripur, a wave of outrage swept through the community following a violent attack on a schoolteacher. Residents, teachers, students, and parents held a human chain demonstration to demand justice and heightened safety measures for educators and pupils.
The protest took place on Monday, 12 January, in the Charamuguria area of Madaripur Sadar Upazila. Participants condemned the morning assault on Anadi Biswas, an assistant mathematics teacher at Charamuguria Merchant High School. Eyewitnesses reported that a group of local troublemakers launched an unprovoked attack on the teacher at the school gate, striking him repeatedly with a hammer. Mr Biswas sustained serious head injuries.
Shouting for help, the teacher’s cries drew nearby residents to the scene, prompting the assailants to flee. Mr Biswas was subsequently rescued and admitted to Madaripur 250-Bed District Hospital, where doctors confirmed he had suffered significant head trauma and was under close observation.
During the demonstration, speakers emphasised the urgent need to identify and apprehend the attackers. They called on local authorities to implement measures ensuring the safety of teachers and students travelling to and from school. Protesters warned that failure to take prompt action could lead to larger-scale demonstrations in the future.
The human chain included school staff, students, and concerned parents, many of whom carried placards demanding accountability and improved security within the educational environment.
Speaking to reporters, Abul Kalam Azad, Officer-in-Charge of Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed that a multi-team investigation is underway. CCTV footage from the vicinity has been collected, and the police are working to apprehend those responsible. Mr Azad expressed confidence that the perpetrators would soon be brought to justice.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns over safety in and around educational institutions. Educators in the area have expressed anxiety about similar attacks and are urging authorities to take preventive action to protect school personnel.
