Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pubail Police Station in Gazipur, Amirul Islam, has sparked major controversy after making a political comment against Jamaat-e-Islami on social media platform Facebook.
Following a formal complaint from Jamaat, he has been withdrawn to the Police Headquarters.
On Tuesday (October 28), Gazipur Metropolitan Police’s Acting Commissioner Zahidul Hasan confirmed the matter, saying a written complaint had been received from Jamaat. An Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) has been assigned to investigate the issue. The allegations are currently under review, and departmental action will be taken if proven true.
According to sources, Jamuna Television’s official Facebook page had posted a photocard featuring a statement by Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman.
The post read: “Even on the day of signing the Charter, the July warriors had to return to the streets—this is shameful.”
Under that post, OC Amirul Islam commented, “First we need a referendum—should the anti-liberation forces even have the right to do politics in this country?”
Within just a few hours, the comment went viral, prompting reactions from both political circles and the general public.
On October 20, Professor Md. Amjad Hossain Khan, a member of the Majlish-e-Shura of Gazipur City Jamaat, submitted a written complaint to the Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner.
In the complaint, he alleged that since assuming office, OC Amirul Islam had been attempting to defame a particular political party. As a government official, he was making open political comments, which violate police regulations. The complaint also mentioned that he was personally advised to refrain from political activities, but he ignored the warnings.
Sources at Gazipur Metropolitan Police confirmed that, considering the issue highly sensitive, higher authorities ordered his immediate withdrawal.
A senior police officer, requesting anonymity, said there is no compromise when it comes to administrative neutrality. Therefore, he was withdrawn in the interest of the investigation.
Khairul Hasan, the nominated candidate from Gazipur-5 constituency, said, “If a responsible police officer publicly takes a stand against any political party, how can the public trust the system? We demand not only his withdrawal but also legal action.”
Since the incident, Gazipur has been abuzz with discussions. The issue has sparked a fresh debate over administrative neutrality, police officers’ code of conduct, and the limits of government officials’ expression on social media.
