A serious allegation of a public death threat against a senior figure of the National Citizen Party (NCP) has sent ripples of concern through Bangladesh’s political arena, particularly at a time when preparations for the forthcoming national election are intensifying. Zainal Abedin Shishir, Joint Member Secretary of the NCP, has claimed that he has been repeatedly threatened with assassination via WhatsApp messages sent from an unidentified foreign number.

The matter came to public attention on Monday evening, 2 February, when Shishir disclosed the incident through a post on his verified Facebook account. In the statement, he asserted that the threats were explicit, sustained, and deeply alarming in nature. According to his account, the sender warned that he would be shot dead before the election and that no individual or institution would be able to protect him. The language used in the messages, Shishir noted, went as far as predicting that his body would be left lying on the street—remarks that have heightened fears of political violence.

Shishir further stated that the individual behind the messages identified himself as “Hossain Zahid”. He claimed that the sender not only sought to intimidate him online but also hinted at possible offline surveillance or contact, thereby intensifying the sense of threat. In his public post, the NCP leader posed a stark question to the nation: whether he, like many political activists and leaders before him, was now at risk of becoming another casualty of political violence.

Framing the threats within a broader ideological struggle, Shishir argued that his outspoken stance against injustice and authoritarian tendencies had made him a target. He reiterated his commitment to continue resisting what he described as fascist and neo-fascist forces through both speech and writing. Emphasising resolve over fear, he declared that intimidation would not silence him and that political resistance inevitably demands courage and, at times, personal sacrifice.

The incident has reignited debate over the security of opposition figures in the pre-election period. Political observers, human rights activists, and members of civil society have expressed grave concern, warning that unchecked threats of this nature could further erode democratic space. Many have urged law enforcement agencies to promptly trace the origin of the messages, identify those responsible, and ensure accountability under the law. Failure to act decisively, they argue, may embolden further acts of intimidation and violence.

At a broader level, analysts stress that such threats are not merely an attack on an individual politician but a direct challenge to democratic norms, political pluralism, and the integrity of the electoral environment. Ensuring the safety of political actors, they contend, is essential for maintaining public confidence in the democratic process.
