Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has officially prohibited all forms of public gatherings, demonstrations, processions, human chains, sit-ins, strikes, and ceremonial marches in several high-security zones of the capital, including the Bangladesh Secretariat, the Prime Adviser’s official residence at Jamuna, and surrounding areas.
The ban, effective from Wednesday, 4 February, has been announced through a formal public notification issued by the DMP headquarters. The directive is intended to ensure public order and safeguard the security of key government officials.
Signed by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali, the notification cites the authority granted under Section 29 of the DMP Ordinance, enabling the police to impose temporary restrictions on assemblies in sensitive areas. The order remains in force until further notice.
According to the notification, the prohibition applies not only to the Bangladesh Secretariat and adjacent zones but also extends to the Prime Adviser’s residence at Jamuna and neighbouring locations, which include critical traffic intersections and public spaces:
| Area / Landmark | Nature of Restriction | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Bangladesh Secretariat and adjacent areas | All meetings, rallies, sit-ins, strikes, human chains, processions | Maintain law and order; protect government operations |
| Prime Adviser’s official residence (Jamuna) | All public assemblies and ceremonial activities | Security of high-profile official residence |
| Hotel Intercontinental Crossing | Prohibition of demonstrations and rallies | Minimise disruption in high-traffic areas |
| Kakrail Mosque Crossing | Ban on public gatherings | Protect public safety and maintain traffic flow |
| Officers Club Crossing | Ban on processions and sit-ins | Preserve order in surrounding government areas |
| Minto Road Crossing | Ban on all public assemblies | Ensure smooth traffic and law enforcement access |
The DMP has urged the general public to adhere strictly to the restrictions to prevent disruptions and ensure personal safety. Authorities have emphasised that violations may lead to legal action under the relevant laws governing public order.
Police officials highlighted that the restriction has been imposed not as a measure against public expression but as a precautionary step in view of the sensitive nature of the areas involved. Law enforcement agencies will monitor the zones closely, with additional personnel deployed to enforce the ban and ensure uninterrupted security and traffic management.
Citizens and organisations are advised to avoid holding any gathering in the restricted zones until the DMP lifts the ban. The police have requested cooperation to maintain peace and stability in the city during this period.
