Public Shooting Shocks Khulna: NCP Leader Targeted

In a shocking incident that has sent ripples across Khulna, Motaleb Sikder, central organiser of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) workers’ wing, was shot in broad daylight on Monday, 22 December. The attack took place around 11:45 a.m. at his residence in the Sonadanga area.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunfire near Sikder’s home, followed by a chaotic scene as locals rushed to help. Emergency services were called immediately, and Sikder was transported in critical condition to Khulna Medical College Hospital. Authorities confirmed that his injuries are serious, and doctors are working to stabilise him.

According to Saif Nawaz, the NCP organiser for Khulna city, Sikder held dual roles as central organiser of the NCP’s labour wing, National Labour Force, and as coordinator for the Khulna division. He was reportedly preparing for a divisional workers’ assembly scheduled to take place in Khulna in the coming days. His colleagues expressed concern that the attack may have been linked to his political activities.

On the law enforcement side, Animesh Mondal, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Sonadanga Model Police Station, confirmed that Sikder was targeted by unknown assailants. “The public managed to rush him to the hospital after the attack,” he stated. Police were dispatched to both the crime scene and the hospital immediately upon receiving the alert. “Investigations are ongoing. We will release further details once we have more information,” Mondal added.

This brazen daytime attack has sparked widespread concern among local political circles. Social media platforms quickly filled with messages wishing Sikder a speedy recovery and calling for justice. Party members have urged authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly, fearing that political rivalry could have been a motive behind the attack.

Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity and interviewing witnesses to identify the perpetrators. Meanwhile, the NCP has vowed to continue its planned activities despite the incident, emphasising unity and resilience in the face of such violence.
