In the Asia Cup Super Four, Bangladesh found themselves in the unusual position of having to keep an eye on Sri Lanka’s results. Sri Lanka’s victory over Afghanistan only allowed them to challenge Liton Das’s side through net run rate calculations, sparking plenty of humorous commentary on social media. Now, the situation has reversed: for Sri Lanka to remain in the tournament, Bangladesh must secure a win.
Sri Lanka, led by Charith Asalanka, had stormed through the group stage unbeaten, winning all three matches in Group B to claim the top spot and enter the Super Four. Yet, that same team now faces the risk of an early exit from the tournament.
Bangladesh, which earlier relied on Sri Lanka to qualify from the group stage, has now defeated Asalanka’s side in their first Super Four encounter. Following that, on Tuesday, Sri Lanka lost to Pakistan by 5 wickets.
For Sri Lanka to stay alive, Bangladesh must defeat India in their match today (Wednesday). If Liton Das and his teammates lose, Sri Lanka, with two losses so far, will remain at the bottom of the table with a net run rate of –0.590. This leaves Sri Lanka with a very narrow path: a Bangladesh victory against India combined with a decisive win over India in their final Super Four match on Friday. Without such results, Bangladesh’s outcome today would make Sri Lanka’s next match inconsequential.
It is not only the Bangladesh-India match that matters for Sri Lanka’s finals ambitions; the Bangladesh-Pakistan match also plays a role. If Bangladesh wins that encounter, Sri Lanka’s chances improve.
Scenario breakdown:
Scenario | Result |
Bangladesh wins both remaining matches | Automatic Super Four qualification, no net run rate calculations needed |
Bangladesh wins one match | Sri Lanka must win against India by a large margin in their last match |
Bangladesh loses both | Sri Lanka’s tournament hopes collapse, final match becomes irrelevant |
If Bangladesh wins their match against Pakistan and Sri Lanka wins their remaining matches, then India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka each have a single victory, resulting in equal points (2 each). At that stage, net run rate will determine standings.
Current Points Table Snapshot
Team | Matches Played | Wins | Losses | Net Run Rate |
India | 2 | 1 | 1 | +0.689 |
Pakistan | 2 | 1 | 1 | +0.226 |
Bangladesh | 2 | 1 | 1 | +0.121 |
Sri Lanka | 2 | 0 | 2 | –0.590 |
India, starting the Super Four with a win over Pakistan, currently tops the points table, with Suryakumar Yadav’s team holding a net run rate of +0.689. Despite two teams sharing 2 points each from their first wins, Pakistan edges ahead of Bangladesh, whose net run rate stands at +0.121.
Bangladesh faces India today and Pakistan tomorrow. To keep their finals hopes alive, Liton Das, Mustafizur Rahman, and the Tigers must win at least one of the two matches. A clean sweep of both fixtures would eliminate the need for any net run rate calculations.
The Super Four final match between India and Sri Lanka is scheduled for Friday, and for Sri Lanka, victory is their only path forward.
This situation underlines the intricate balance of results and net run rates in the Asia Cup, making every Super Four match critical not only for the participating teams but also for those relying on other outcomes.
