The new club football season has only just begun, and defending La Liga champions Barcelona have already faced a significant setback. Midfielder Pablo Gavi will be out of action for at least 4–5 months after suffering a knee injury to his right leg, which now requires surgery.

Gavi, 21, has previously struggled with a serious ACL injury, keeping him out for 11 months last season. Unfortunately, the injury has recurred in the same right knee.

This season, Gavi played two La Liga matches for Barcelona before sustaining the injury during training in August. Since then, he has been sidelined. Last season, after recovering from his previous ACL injury, Gavi played a pivotal role in helping Barcelona secure the La Liga title.

Barcelona confirmed the severity of the injury in an official statement: "First-team player Pablo Gavi will undergo arthroscopy to repair his knee, which is essential to restore its previous condition. Rehabilitation is expected to take around 4–5 months."

Earlier reports from Spanish media had estimated a 6–7 week absence, making this announcement a major blow for the Catalan club.

Gavi will miss these fixtures, as well as other games later in the season. His injury also affects the Spain national team, ruling him out of October’s World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Bulgaria. Although initially included in the September squad against Bulgaria and Turkey, Gavi could not participate due to the injury.

Current La Liga Standings

Barcelona currently sit second in the La Liga table, with 4 wins and 1 draw in 5 matches, accumulating 13 points. Their arch-rivals, Real Madrid, are top after winning all 6 matches, holding 18 points.

This latest injury is a significant challenge for manager Hansi Flick, as Barcelona aim to defend their La Liga title without one of their key midfielders for the next several months.
