The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has temporarily suspended the registration of a passenger bus involved in the recent fatal accident at the Daulatdia Ferry Ghat, where the vehicle plunged into the Padma River, resulting in significant loss of life.
The decision follows a devastating incident that occurred on 25 March at approximately 5:15 p.m., when the bus—operated under the banner of Souharda Paribahan—fell into the river while attempting to board a ferry from pontoon number three at the terminal in Goaland upazila of Rajbari District.
The suspension order was issued on Thursday (26 March) by Assistant Director Muhammad Ahidur Rahman of the BRTA’s Rajbari Circle. According to the official directive, the vehicle bearing registration number Rajbari-B-11-0024 has been placed under immediate suspension pending further investigation.
Authorities have cited provisions under the Road Transport Act 2018 and the Road Transport Rules 2022, which empower regulators to take action in cases involving serious safety violations or fatal accidents. As part of the directive, the bus owner has been instructed to present relevant documentation within three working days and explain why the registration should not be permanently revoked.
The documents requested include the vehicle’s registration certificate, tax token, fitness certificate, route permit, and the driver’s licence.
The tragic accident has already claimed numerous lives, with rescue teams recovering a total of 26 bodies as of the latest official update. Several passengers also sustained injuries, while a small number reportedly managed to escape by swimming to safety.
Below is a summary of the incident based on official reports:

A motor vehicle inspector from the Rajbari BRTA office, Liton Kumar Dutta, conducted an on-site inspection following the incident, gathering preliminary evidence to support the regulatory decision.
The BRTA has made it clear that failure to comply with its directive within the stipulated timeframe could result in the permanent cancellation of the vehicle’s registration. Additionally, legal proceedings may be initiated against the owner under applicable transport laws.
Officials emphasised that such enforcement measures are essential to ensure accountability and maintain safety standards across the country’s transport sector. The tragedy has once again drawn attention to operational risks associated with ferry crossings, particularly at busy terminals such as Daulatdia, which serves as a key নদীপথ (river crossing route) connecting southern and western regions with the capital.
The incident has reignited debate over transport safety protocols, vehicle fitness compliance, and ferry boarding procedures in Bangladesh. Experts have pointed out that overcrowding, inadequate supervision, and poor adherence to safety guidelines often contribute to such disasters.
In recent years, authorities have pledged to strengthen enforcement mechanisms, yet accidents continue to occur, highlighting gaps in implementation.
The investigation remains ongoing, with officials examining multiple factors, including driver conduct, mechanical condition of the vehicle, and ferry terminal management procedures. Authorities have also indicated that additional regulatory actions may follow depending on the findings.
As families of the victims continue to mourn, the suspension of the bus’s registration represents an initial step towards accountability. However, broader systemic reforms may be required to prevent similar tragedies in the future and restore public confidence in the country’s transport safety framework.
