A ten-month-old infant has died after showing symptoms consistent with measles at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura, prompting renewed concern over a possible localised outbreak in the district.
The child, identified as Humaira, was pronounced dead in the early hours of Wednesday in the hospital’s isolation ward, which has been designated for suspected measles patients. Her parents are residents of Sherpur upazila in Bogura. Medical officials reported that the child had developed a skin rash and other clinical signs associated with measles prior to her death.
Hospital authorities confirmed that around ten children presenting with similar symptoms were undergoing treatment in the isolation unit over the past 24 hours. Samples from the deceased infant have been collected and sent to Dhaka for laboratory testing in order to confirm whether measles was the direct cause of death.
Speaking to reporters, the hospital’s spokesperson and deputy director stated that isolation arrangements had been introduced to prevent further spread of the infection. He added that in severe cases, complications may require paediatric intensive care support; however, the hospital currently lacks a dedicated paediatric ICU facility. A formal request has reportedly been submitted to the Ministry of Health for staffing and resources to establish such critical care services.
Meanwhile, at the 250-bed Mohammad Ali Hospital in Bogura, seven patients displaying measles-like symptoms sought treatment within the past 24 hours, with one patient admitted for further care. Hospital officials confirmed that samples from the admitted patient have also been dispatched to Dhaka for diagnostic confirmation.
In a broader district-wide update, health authorities stated that samples from 26 suspected cases collected over the past month from various upazila health complexes have been sent for testing. Of these, two cases have been confirmed as measles. Officials further noted that no active measles patients are currently admitted in any upazila health facility in the district.
| Health Facility | Suspected Cases | Admissions | Deaths | Laboratory Testing Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital | ~10 children (isolation ward) | Not specified | 1 | Samples sent to Dhaka |
| Mohammad Ali Hospital (250-bed) | 7 cases in 24 hours | 1 | 0 | Samples sent to Dhaka |
| Upazila Health Complexes (district-wide) | 26 samples in last month | 0 current admissions | 0 | 2 confirmed measles cases |
Health officials have emphasised continued surveillance and rapid testing as essential measures to control any potential spread. They have also urged guardians to seek early medical attention for children showing fever, rash, or respiratory symptoms, which are commonly associated with measles infection.
The incident has highlighted gaps in critical paediatric care facilities in the district, particularly the absence of a dedicated intensive care unit for children, which doctors say could be crucial in managing severe complications arising from infectious diseases.
