Actress Mumtahina Chowdhury Toya has reiterated her commitment to meaningful, well-crafted work, distancing herself from what she describes as the lure of instant or superficial popularity. Since her debut in the entertainment industry through the Lux-Channel I Superstar competition in 2010, Toya has built a reputation as a versatile performer across television dramas, advertisements, and presenting roles.
Following her early success, Toya became a familiar face on Bangladeshi television, earning audience appreciation for her natural screen presence and emotional range. In recent years, however, she has been noticeably selective, appearing less frequently but choosing projects that offer narrative depth and strong character arcs. According to the actress, this deliberate approach reflects a personal and professional shift rather than a withdrawal from acting.
After nearly two years away from full-fledged drama roles, Toya is set to return this Eid with a special television play titled Golap Ar Kanta, directed by Ferdous Hasan. The production, recently shot in Uttara, Dhaka, pairs her opposite Rashed Zaman Shawon. The storyline explores the tender tensions of married life, blending affection, misunderstandings, and generational contrasts within a family setting. Veteran performers Abul Hayat and Dilara Zaman portray senior family members, lending further gravitas to the narrative.
Reflecting on her return, Toya said she genuinely enjoyed being back in front of the camera after a long hiatus. Although she had appeared briefly in an item song last year, she had not taken on a complete acting role. She credits the strength of the script, the director’s storytelling style, and the collaborative atmosphere on set for convincing her to accept the project.
Explaining her break from acting, Toya noted that repeatedly portraying similar characters had led to creative fatigue. She felt the need to step back, spend time with her family, and re-engage with her craft from a fresh perspective. In her words, quality now matters far more than quantity. She no longer seeks immediate media attention, preferring instead to surprise audiences with thoughtful performances that reveal new dimensions of her talent.
This Eid, viewers will see her in just one drama, alongside appearances as a presenter in several special programmes. Beyond television, Toya is also developing new ideas for her personal YouTube channel. In cinema, she was last seen in Bengali Beauty, a performance that drew positive responses. She currently has several film offers under consideration and has hinted at returning to the big screen after carefully reviewing scripts.
