RAB to Be Renamed ‘Special Intervention Force’

The Government of Bangladesh has decided to rename the elite paramilitary unit, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The organisation will henceforth be known as the Special Intervention Force (SIF).

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Adviser on Home Affairs, following a meeting of the law-and-order core committee at the Secretariat. He stated that a committee had previously recommended the name change, and the government will issue an official order in due course.

The move marks a significant rebranding of one of Bangladesh’s most high-profile security agencies, which has been operational for nearly two decades. Established in 2004, RAB first appeared publicly on 26 March 2004, participating in the Independence Day parade. Its initial operational assignment came shortly afterwards, when it was tasked with providing security during the Pohela Boishakh (Bengali New Year) celebrations at Ramna Botmura on 14 April 2004.

Initially focused on intelligence-gathering and internal security duties, RAB began full operational activities on 21 June 2004. Since then, it has been involved in counter-terrorism, organised crime prevention, and high-risk operations across the country.

The decision to rename the agency appears to reflect a broader strategy to modernise and restructure Bangladesh’s security apparatus, emphasising specialised operational capabilities under the new SIF banner. Officials have indicated that operational procedures and staffing will largely remain the same, although the rebranding may bring changes in public perception and international engagement.

For historical context, the following table summarises key milestones in RAB’s formation and operations:

Event Date Description
Public debut 26 March 2004 Participated in Independence Day parade
First operational task 14 April 2004 Security for Pohela Boishakh at Ramna Botmura
Full operational status 21 June 2004 Began regular operational activities nationwide

The introduction of the Special Intervention Force is expected to maintain continuity in operations while projecting a modernised identity for Bangladesh’s premier rapid-response unit. Observers note that the name change may also aim to underscore the agency’s specialisation in high-stakes interventions, aligning it with similar elite units internationally.
