Rafinha Hat-Trick Secures Barcelona Revenge

Barcelona exacted sweet revenge on Sevilla with a commanding 5-2 victory at the Camp Nou, reclaiming a four-point lead at the summit of La Liga. Coming into the match just one point ahead of Real Madrid, Barcelona were determined to restore their advantage, and they did so in emphatic fashion.

Brazilian winger Rafinha stole the show with a hat-trick, while Dani Olmo and João Cancelo also found the net. The win provided a perfect morale boost for Hans-Dieter Flick’s side ahead of their second-leg Champions League tie against Newcastle United.

This triumph was particularly sweet for Barcelona, who suffered a 4-1 defeat to Sevilla in October. On Sunday, despite late goals from Oso and Jibril So reducing the deficit, Barcelona maintained control throughout the match.

It marked Barcelona’s 12th consecutive victory at the Camp Nou since returning in November, extending their impressive goal tally in this run to 39 goals. Notably, teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal was rested until the 67th minute, with Flick choosing to give the youngster some recovery time.

Match Highlights

Barcelona’s early aggression set the tone. Within seven minutes, Sevilla defender So fouled Cancelo in the penalty area, allowing Rafinha to calmly convert from the spot with a Panenka finish. By the 21st minute, Rafinha doubled the lead from a second penalty, slotting the ball into the bottom corner with composure.

In the 38th minute, Olmo capitalised on a defensive lapse from Sevilla to score Barcelona’s third, effectively putting the match beyond immediate doubt. However, Sevilla responded late in the first half, with Oso finishing a superb volley from Juanlu Sánchez’s cross during injury time to reduce the deficit.

Barcelona regained dominance early in the second half. At the 51st minute, Rafinha completed his hat-trick after Fermin Lopez created a chance; his shot deflected off Nemanja Gudelj into the net. Cancelo added a fifth in the 60th minute with a brilliant solo effort, cutting in from midfield and curling the ball past Gudelj and through Vlachodimos’ legs, the shot ricocheting off the post before crossing the line.

Late opportunities for Robert Lewandowski went unconverted, but Sevilla scored a consolation in injury time through So, finalising the score at 5-2.
