Even before play began, dark clouds over Nelson hinted at trouble — and in the end, nature had the final say. The fourth T20 International between New Zealand and the West Indies was abandoned after repeated interruptions caused by heavy rain on Monday evening.
The umpires waited until the very last possible moment, hoping for a break in the weather. But with the rain persisting and the outfield rendered unfit for play, the inevitable decision came — the match was officially declared abandoned.
Before the stoppage, only 39 deliveries were bowled. Having lost the toss, the West Indies were asked to bat first and reached 38 for 1 in 6.3 overs before the rain returned.
Alick Athanaze was the only batter to fall, scoring 21 runs off 18 balls before being dismissed. His partner Amir Jangoo remained unbeaten on 12 from 18 deliveries, while captain Shai Hope was not out on 3 from 3 balls when play was halted for the final time.
Jimmy Neesham claimed the lone wicket for New Zealand, delivering a tidy spell before the rain washed away any hopes of further action.
As the game ended without a result, New Zealand maintained their 2–1 lead in the five-match T20I series. The final and deciding match will take place in Dunedin on Thursday, where the West Indies will look to level the series, while the hosts will aim to seal it once and for all.
The current series situation is summarised below:
| Match | Venue | Result | Winning Team | Series Standing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st T20I | Auckland | West Indies won | West Indies | 1–0 |
| 2nd T20I | Wellington | New Zealand won | New Zealand | 1–1 |
| 3rd T20I | Christchurch | New Zealand won | New Zealand | 2–1 |
| 4th T20I | Nelson | Abandoned | — | 2–1 |
| 5th T20I | Dunedin | Yet to be played | — | — |
With rain already disrupting one game, both sides — and the fans — will be hoping for clear skies in Dunedin to ensure a fitting finale to what has been a closely contested series.
