Rajshahi is grappling with an acute fuel crisis as the global conflict continues to impact energy supplies. Most petrol stations in the city have halted sales since Monday morning, leaving residents and transport operators in considerable distress. Amid rising fears of disorder, the Petrol Pump Owners Association has urged authorities to deploy military personnel to maintain order at fuel outlets.
Anisur Rahman Shimul, General Secretary of the Rajshahi District Petrol Pump Owners Association, explained that all reserves at local pumps were depleted by Sunday. “From today, no petrol or octane is available at any station,” he said. Motorcycle riders, in particular, have been crowding the pumps, adding to the tense situation.
Shimul noted that while many stations have posted notices, limited supplies are expected from the Baghbari depot. “Our lorry, with a capacity of 13,500 litres, could only collect 3,000 litres,” he stated. “We have instructed suppliers to provide sufficient fuel. If deliveries arrive overnight, sales may resume on Tuesday.”
He emphasised the risk of chaos once fuel sales restart, arguing that police alone cannot manage the crowds. “We have requested the Deputy Commissioner to deploy the army at petrol stations; without such support, resuming sales will be impossible,” Shimul added.
Observations across the city revealed long queues at various pumps, including Saheb Bazar, Sagarpara, Shiroil, the Court area, and Talaimari. Despite waiting for hours, many motorists—ranging from motorcycles and private cars to public transport vehicles—were unable to obtain fuel. Limited sales at some stations barely meet demand.
Motorcyclist Robiul Islam, travelling from Baneshwar in Puthia, told reporters, “I have been standing in line since morning but still haven’t received fuel. My work is coming to a halt. If this continues, our livelihoods will be affected. Immediate restoration of fuel supplies is essential.” Another motorcyclist, Sakawat Hossain from Poba, said, “I went from one station to another searching for petrol, but my tank ran dry before I could fill it. Now there is no way to get home.”
The shortage has forced some vehicles to halt by the roadside, causing traffic congestion on several key city routes. Commuters and transport operators alike have expressed growing concern over the disruption to daily life and commerce.
