Rajshahi University has removed six deans from their posts following sustained student protests, marking a significant administrative development at one of Bangladesh’s leading public universities. The decision was formally approved on Monday morning by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Saleh Hasan Naqib, amid mounting pressure over the continuation of deans perceived to be politically aligned with the Awami League.
The university administration confirmed that, with immediate effect, the routine responsibilities of the six faculties will be overseen by the Vice-Chancellor himself and the two Pro-Vice-Chancellors, in accordance with university statutes. Acting Registrar Professor Iftikharul Islam Masud announced the decision to the media at the administration building later in the day.
Explaining the circumstances, Professor Masud stated that the six deans had submitted written applications expressing their inability to continue performing their duties in the prevailing situation. “Once the Vice-Chancellor accepted these applications, the responsibility automatically reverted to him under university regulations. Subsequently, he decided to distribute these duties among himself and the two Pro-Vice-Chancellors,” he said.
