Afghanistan’s star leg-spinner Rashid Khan, widely regarded as one of the best in white-ball cricket, endured a day he would rather forget in The Hundred on Tuesday, 12 August. In a match against the Birmingham Phoenix, the bowler set an unwanted record for the most expensive bowling performance in the tournament’s history.
Playing for Oval Invincibles in Birmingham, Rashid conceded 59 runs in 4 overs (20 balls), surpassing the previous record of 53 runs in 4 overs set by Namibia’s David Wiese.
Match Details:
| Player | Overs | Balls | Runs Conceded | Wickets | Notes |
| Rashid Khan | 4 | 20 | 59 | 0 | Most expensive bowling in The Hundred history |
The innings began with Joe Clarke and Will Smeed attacking Rashid from the outset, scoring two sixes and a four in just five deliveries. By then, Rashid had already given away 33 runs in 15 balls. However, the main onslaught came from Phoenix captain Liam Livingstone, who finished Rashid’s last five balls with scores of 4, 6, 6, 6, 4, leaving the leg-spinner severely battered.
Rashid’s recent form has been underwhelming. In the latest IPL season, he conceded 33 sixes, the highest in a single tournament season. Representing Gujarat Titans, he took 9 wickets in 15 matches, with an average of 57.1 and an economy rate of 9.3.
This match adds an unfortunate chapter to Rashid Khan’s otherwise illustrious career, highlighting the challenging nature of T20 and Hundred formats even for elite bowlers.
