The 2024-25 La Liga season is shaping up to be a thrilling tug-of-war at the very top. While Santiago Bernabéu’s heroes—Real Madrid—have momentarily claimed pole position, the relentless Catalan warriors, Barcelona, are hot on their heels. Hansi Flick’s side is currently in a solid position, yet there is no room for complacency.
On Saturday night at their home ground, Real Madrid welcomed Sevilla in what turned out to be a crucial fixture. The hosts emerged victorious with a 2-0 scoreline, a result that now places significant pressure on Barcelona, as Xabi Alonso’s side feels the hot breath of their fierce rivals.
Before facing Sevilla, Real were four points adrift of league leaders Barcelona, trailing 39 to 43. Saturday’s win dramatically closed that gap to just one point, reigniting hopes of challenging for the title. However, it’s worth noting that Real have played one more match than their Catalan counterparts, highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency in the remaining fixtures.
Hansi Flick’s team has every reason to remain confident. Over 18 matches, Real have recorded 13 wins, three draws, and just two defeats. Barcelona, meanwhile, have played 17 games, claiming 14 wins, one draw, and suffering two losses. Up next, Real travel to face Villarreal later tonight, another vital encounter for their title ambitions.
Breaking the deadlock against Sevilla came in the 38th minute, courtesy of Jude Bellingham, brilliantly assisted by Rodrigo. This marked Bellingham’s fourth goal of the season in La Liga. The second goal arrived in the 85th minute after Sevilla’s Sanchez fouled Rodrigo in the box, resulting in a penalty which Kylian Mbappé expertly converted.
The French forward continues to be unstoppable, scoring his 18th goal of the league campaign while also providing four assists. He currently leads the scoring charts, seven goals ahead of second-placed Ferran Torres.
In doing so, Mbappé also equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s remarkable record of 59 goals in a single calendar year, a feat made even more extraordinary by the timing—just as he celebrates his 27th birthday. For the French superstar, this could hardly be a better personal milestone.
As the La Liga season intensifies, Real Madrid’s victory over Sevilla is a clear statement of intent. Barcelona may still lead the table, but with one point separating the sides, every match promises drama, intensity, and a race to the very end.
