Real Madrid is currently confronting a significant tactical dilemma due to the absence of Brazilian forward Rodrygo Goes. The 22-year-old attacker’s unavailability could have a substantial impact on the club’s performances in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. Rodrygo will miss matches owing to a combination of suspension and a hamstring injury, complicating coach Carlo Ancelotti’s selection and strategic planning.
Rodrygo received a two-match suspension from UEFA after being found guilty of using “inappropriate and disrespectful language” towards a referee. This suspension will apply to the first two Champions League play-off matches, meaning Rodrygo will be unavailable for these crucial fixtures.
In addition to the suspension, Rodrygo is sidelined with a hamstring injury in his knee. According to Real Madrid’s medical team, he is expected to be out of action for approximately ten days. If his recovery proceeds according to plan, he could return for the first leg of the Champions League fixture against Benfica in Lisbon on 18 February, and the return leg at Santiago Bernabéu on 26 February.
Rodrygo will also miss upcoming La Liga matches, including clashes against Valencia and Real Sociedad. Addressing the incident on social media, Rodrygo stated:
"Yesterday, in a moment of frustration, I directed inappropriate comments at the referee. This does not reflect my character. I sincerely apologise to our supporters, the club, and my teammates. Together, we will defend our flag in the Champions League."
Real Madrid’s coaching and medical staff remain optimistic about Rodrygo’s swift recovery. However, the combination of his absence with injuries and suspensions affecting other key players has created a considerable strategic challenge for Ancelotti, particularly when planning line-ups and tactical adjustments.
The table below summarises the current absences among Real Madrid’s important players:
| Player | Position | Issue / Absence | Missed Matches |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rodrygo Goes | Forward | Hamstring injury + 2-match suspension | Valencia, Real Sociedad |
| Raúl Asensio | Defender | Suspension (yellow cards) | Benfica, next match |
| Jude Bellingham | Midfielder | Hamstring injury | TBD |
| Trent Alexander-Arnold | Defender | Injury | TBD |
| Antonio Rüdiger | Defender | Injury | TBD |
| Ferland Mendy | Defender | Injury | TBD |
| Vinícius Júnior | Forward | 1-match suspension | Next match |
Rodrygo’s absence, combined with other key players being sidelined, necessitates greater tactical flexibility, careful rotation, and strategic adjustments from Real Madrid. Maintaining competitiveness across both La Liga and the Champions League will require meticulous planning and heightened focus in every forthcoming match.
