The romantic homecoming of Xabi Alonso has met a premature and clinical end. In a move that has sent shockwaves through the footballing world, Real Madrid officially dismissed their former midfield maestro yesterday, ending a tenure that lasted just seven months. The decision was catalysed by a bruising 3–2 defeat to arch-rivals Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final, held at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Alonso, who enjoyed a glittering playing career at the Santiago Bernabéu, was appointed in June 2025 following the departure of the legendary Carlo Ancelotti. Having orchestrated a historic period of dominance at Bayer Leverkusen between 2022 and 2025, Alonso arrived in Madrid with the reputation of a tactical visionary. However, the weight of expectation at the world’s most successful club proved insurmountable.
The final in Jeddah served as the ultimate tipping point. As the final whistle blew and Barcelona lifted the trophy, sections of the Madridista faithful were heard chanting for his removal. The club hierarchy, notorious for its lack of patience regarding silverware, acted with characteristic swiftness.
Despite the dismissal, Alonso’s win percentage remained respectable. However, at Real Madrid, "respectable" is rarely sufficient when compared to the relentless pace set by Barcelona in domestic competitions.

In an official statement released this morning, the club noted: "Real Madrid CF announces that it has been mutually agreed that Xabi Alonso's cycle as first-team coach ends here. The club thanks him for his professionalism."
In a double announcement that suggests a pre-meditated transition, Real Madrid confirmed that another "son of the house," Álvaro Arbeloa, has been promoted to the role of head coach. Arbeloa, a former Spanish international defender who won eight trophies during his playing days at the Bernabéu, has been rising through the coaching ranks since 2020.
Arbeloa had been managing Real Madrid Castilla (the club's reserve side) since June 2025. Known for his fierce loyalty to the club and his tactical discipline, the hierarchy hopes Arbeloa can galvanise a dressing room that appeared increasingly disjointed under Alonso's sophisticated but evidently incompatible system.
The new manager faces an immediate baptism of fire. With a four-point deficit to bridge in La Liga and the knockout stages of the Champions League looming, Arbeloa must prove that his intimate knowledge of the club's "DNA" is enough to halt Barcelona's burgeoning dominance under Hansi Flick.
