Referendum Law to Be Enacted Within 3-4 Working Days: Legal Adviser

Legal Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul has stated that the referendum law will be enacted within the next 3-4 working days. He made the announcement on Thursday (20 November) during a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy auditorium in Dhaka.

He said, “We are moving quickly with the referendum law. Today is Thursday; it should be enacted within the next three to four working days.”

Dr Nazrul further stated, “Another historic verdict has been delivered today. After a long struggle, we received a caretaker government, which ensured the integrity of our elections. Under the caretaker government, we have witnessed several free and fair elections. It was always observed that the ruling party would lose, which seemed normal to us. Unfortunately, a verdict under the leadership of the former Chief Justice declared this system illegal. Later, the then Awami League government annulled it through the Fifteenth Amendment.”

He also mentioned, “A verdict from about a month ago, in which former Chief Justice Khairul Haque controversially declared the caretaker government illegal, has now been overturned. The caretaker government has been reinstated. This will take effect after the next parliamentary election. When the parliament is dissolved, the caretaker government will be formed, and it will take effect within 15 days of the formation of the new parliament.”
