The news of Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mainul Islam of Jajira Police Station being transferred has brought relief to the residents of Jajira, Shariatpur. For a long time, the community had been distressed by various alleged misconducts of OC Mainul Islam. The residents claimed that he extorted large sums of money through the arrest business, threatened both wealthy and ordinary citizens by summoning them to the police station, branding them as members of the ruling party to secure jail sentences, manipulated charges, and embezzled millions through various corrupt practices.
Allegations have also been raised against him regarding irregularities in taking general diaries and during investigations. His prolonged misuse of authority had created fear and resentment among locals.
Following the transfer news, hundreds of people posted messages of relief on social media platform Facebook. Md. Juel Bepari wrote, “Among all the OCs at Jajira Police Station, OC Mainul Islam was the worst.” Md. Shahid commented, “May God’s wrath be upon Mainul; he harassed people in Jajira, even arresting fish trader Khabir Madbar without cause before leaving.” Liton Akon requested the Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate his finances, claiming that he amassed substantial amounts of money illegally within five months. Another resident stated, “He took millions from Jajira.” Mohammad Akash Madbar added, “Alhamdulillah, now the people of Jajira can live in peace.” Redowan wrote, “The people of Jajira are saved, but the people of Chattogram are in danger.”
Hundreds expressed relief online, calling for proper investigation of Mainul Islam’s illegally acquired wealth.
Local residents reported that fear of reprisal prevented people, businessmen, and political figures from speaking against his misconduct. An anonymous lawyer from Shariatpur District Judge Court stated, “A local BNP leader was falsely portrayed as a ruling party member and taken to court because he refused to pay OC Mainul Islam.” He also reportedly released detainees secretly in exchange for money and extorted cash by arresting BNP workers as Awami League members before releasing them after night-time meetings.
OC Mainul Islam received monthly payments and roamed various areas in the district with senior Awami League and banned student leaders. Intelligence sources revealed that he had attempted to be transferred to Naria Police Station in the same district, a wealthy area with many expatriates in Italy, France, and the UK.
Following the news of his transfer, many believe that justice in Jajira will now be more accessible. Ahead of the 13th parliamentary elections, 527 police stations were reshuffled through a lottery by the government. Residents hope that the new OC at Jajira Police Station will improve law and order, enhance service quality, and ensure a more responsive and accountable approach to the public.
When contacted by phone, OC Mohammad Mainul Islam told reporters, “Ask those who wrote it. I will stay here for another week,” and ended the call.
