Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, senior joint secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has accused a religious-based political party of conducting propaganda against BNP to cover up their own misconduct.

He made the allegations during a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan on Wednesday, 13 August, at 11:00 am.

Denial of Extortion Allegations

Addressing viral claims from a doctor in Chittagong regarding extortion, Rizvi stated:

“The authorities took action against him for constructing an unauthorised building. No one attacked him; he applied colour to his nose and came live on social media to launch propaganda against BNP leaders and activists.”

He added that the upcoming elections are likely driving these politically motivated actions.

Condemnation of Violence

Rizvi also spoke out about the recent beating and killing of two Hindu individuals in Rangpur, emphasising: “Through public welfare-oriented justice, every criminal, regardless of status, must be brought to justice. The government must ensure that no one loses their life illegally due to incitement. Opportunists are trying to exploit this chaotic environment.”

He further alleged that ordinary citizens currently lack security and that a mob culture prevails, urging the interim government to take immediate action and implement exemplary punishment, stressing: “No one has the right to take the law into their own hands.”

Allegations of Looting Under Awami League

Rizvi criticised alleged looting during the Awami League’s rule, stating: “Over 2,000 crore takas were reportedly stored in Farmers Bank. Although it now operates as Padma Bank, there is no trace of those funds. The government must act earnestly to recover this money.”

Criticism of Proportional Representation System

Rizvi also commented on the proportional representation (PR) system, saying:

“Bangladesh has not yet reached the level of developed countries. In a poor economy, elections under PR are not sustainable. The country is not ready for PR at this moment. We must first strengthen democratic practice. This system seems designed only to create complications, with no inherent transparency.”

Party Discipline and Accountability

Regarding party discipline, Rizvi stated: “Those proven to be committing crimes in the name of our party or its affiliates are immediately subject to action. Following investigation, lifetime expulsion is enforced where necessary.”
