Remembering Lyricist Gauriprasanna Mazumder

Gauriprasanna Mazumder remains a distinguished and radiant figure in the realm of Bengali music. Born on 5 December 1924 in Gopalnagar village of Faridpur upazila in Pabna, he grew up in an academic environment shaped by his father, Girijaprasanna Mazumder, a professor at Presidency College and a noted botanist.

During his childhood he developed a deep fascination for sports, which gradually shifted towards the arts, particularly drawing. Eventually, his creative spirit found its true expression in poetry and music, paving the way for him to become one of the most enduring lyricists in the Bengali musical tradition. His love for music also led him to receive training from Anupam Ghatak for a short period.

While studying at Presidency College, he wrote the song “Bandhu Go Ei Madhumas”, which Sachin Dev Burman personally composed and recorded—marking the first major breakthrough in Gauriprasanna’s lyrical career. From there, he swiftly rose to prominence across records, All India Radio, and the world of cinema.

He penned unforgettable songs for numerous timeless films such as Agnipariksha, Pathe Holo Deri, Harano Sur, Saptapadi, Deo Neya, and Marutirtha Hinglaj. In the latter half of the twentieth century, he emerged as one of the defining creative forces shaping modern Bengali music and film soundtracks.

After battling cancer for nearly ten years, he passed away on 20 August 1986. Yet his songs—resonating with tears, love, and cherished memories—continue to echo through time.

Tribute to Gauriprasanna Mazumder. His name shall forever shine in the history of Bengali music.
