Republicans Seek to Rename Opera House After Melania Trump

Republicans in the United States House of Representatives have proposed a controversial amendment to rename the Opera House within Washington D.C.’s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in honour of First Lady Melania Trump.

The measure, introduced during discussions on the 2026 federal budget, ties the renaming directly to continued funding for the nation’s premier cultural institution.

Proposed Name Change and Justification

The House Appropriations Committee, led by Republicans, voted to advance the amendment on Tuesday, proposing the venue be renamed the:

“First Lady Melania Trump Opera House”

The proposal was spearheaded by Congressman Mike Simpson of Idaho, who stated:

“It’s an excellent way to recognise her support and commitment to promoting the arts.”

The amendment is part of broader legislation focused on 2026 funding for the Department of the Interior and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Trump’s Increasing Influence Over the Kennedy Center

The renaming effort is the latest development in President Donald Trump’s assertive push to reshape the Kennedy Center’s leadership and identity.

Earlier this year, Trump:

  • Dismissed existing board members in February
  • Appointed himself as chairman
  • Installed Richard Grenell, a close political ally, as the institution’s new president

Trump has long criticised the Kennedy Center as being excessively “woke”, and he has replaced key board members with close confidants, including:

New Trustee Role in Trump Administration
Susie Wiles White House Chief of Staff
Dan Scavino Deputy Chief of Staff
Usha Vance Second Lady

Trump at the Kennedy Center

The former president made a notable appearance at the Kennedy Center in June, attending an opening-night performance of the musical Les Misérables. The audience’s reception was mixed, with both cheers and boos reported during his entrance.

Broader Republican Campaign to Cement Trump’s Legacy

Renaming the opera house is just one part of a wider Republican initiative to immortalise Trump’s legacy through renamings and symbolic gestures.

Proposals currently circulating in Congress include:

Proposal Status / Context
Rename Dulles International Airport after Donald Trump Legislative initiative introduced
Put Trump on the $100 bill Proposal to replace Benjamin Franklin
Add Trump to Mount Rushmore Notional proposal lacking formal support
Create a national holiday in Trump’s name Under early consideration
Rebrand Washington Metro as the Trump Train Concept floated by pro-Trump lawmakers

Legislative Hurdles Ahead

Although the House Appropriations Committee has approved the amendment, the renaming is not yet final. For the 2,364-seat opera house—the second-largest venue in the Kennedy Center complex—to receive its new name, the change must pass both chambers of Congress.

Current Senate Landscape

Party Senate Seats Held
Republicans 53
Democrats + Independents 47

Given that spending bills require 60 votes to pass in the Senate, Democrats have the ability to block or strip the amendment during negotiations.
