Results Due by Friday, Commission Says

Bangladesh’s Election Commission has ruled out any prolonged delay in announcing the results of the forthcoming 13th Jatiya Sangsad election and the accompanying referendum, stating unequivocally that the nationwide outcome can be finalised by Friday, the day after polling. The commission has dismissed speculation that the process could take three days or longer, describing such claims as unfounded and misleading.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday at the Election Commission Secretariat in the capital, Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarkar said the authorities were fully prepared to publish the results promptly once voting concludes on Thursday. He noted that while initial concerns had been raised over the scale and complexity of the election, most of those apprehensions had been addressed through coordination among stakeholders, including the administration and law enforcement agencies. According to him, the overall electoral environment is calmer, more orderly and more conducive than in many previous polls, reinforcing the commission’s stated objective of delivering a credible and inclusive election.

Addressing questions about whether holding a parliamentary election and a referendum on the same day could slow down the counting and tabulation process, the commissioner said modern automation had significantly reduced such risks. Digital result transmission systems, multiple backup devices and decentralised data collection methods will enable rapid reporting from polling centres to the central results hub. He acknowledged that results from a small number of remote or hard-to-reach areas might take slightly longer to arrive due to geographical and communication constraints, but stressed that this would not materially delay the announcement of the overall outcome.

On security, the commission said an extensive, multi-layered deployment had been put in place to ensure a stable law and order situation throughout polling day and the immediate post-election period. Approximately 1.1 to 1.2 million personnel from the police, Rapid Action Battalion, Border Guard Bangladesh, Ansar and the armed forces will be engaged nationwide. The election will be managed in a coordinated manner under the leadership of returning officers and under the direct supervision of the Election Commission.

To strengthen transparency and oversight, multiple monitoring teams will operate in each parliamentary constituency. Field-level updates will be transmitted to a central monitoring cell every two hours. Polling centres with electricity supply are being equipped with closed-circuit television cameras, while security personnel have been instructed to use body-worn cameras to enhance accountability and deter misconduct.

The commission has also activated a dedicated fact-finding cell to counter rumours and disinformation. Officials said any false or misleading content circulating on social media would be promptly verified and addressed to prevent confusion or unrest.
