Reigning world 100-metre champion Sha’Carri Richardson has publicly apologised to fellow sprinter Christian Coleman and addressed her domestic violence arrest last month.
The 25-year-old American athlete, who claimed silver in the 100m at last year’s Paris Olympics and secured the 2023 World Championship title in Budapest, was arrested on 27 July at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport following an altercation with her boyfriend, Coleman.
Both athletes competed days later at the US Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Coleman, who reportedly did not press charges, stated that Richardson should not have been arrested.
Nevertheless, Richardson issued an apology in an Instagram post regarding the incident:
“I apologise to Christian. He came into my life and gave me more than a relationship – he gave me a greater understanding of unconditional love than I had experienced in my past.
Due to my past trauma and pain, I was blind and blocked off, unable to receive or give it fully. I love him, and I cannot apologise enough to him.”
In a social media video, Richardson admitted she had placed herself “in a compromised situation” and has undertaken “a lot of self-reflection.” She emphasised personal accountability for her actions:
“I’m taking this time not only to see myself but to get myself the help I need, which will ultimately reflect who I truly am in my heart and spirit. I am not allowing this moment to define me, but I am accepting it and learning from it.”
Richardson also highlighted her commitment to accountability, aiming to be her best self for both her family and fans:
“I refuse to run away. I will face everything head-on, because the rewards on the other side are great, but you must go through challenges to get there.”
As a result of the incident, Richardson withdrew from the 100m semi-finals at the US Championships. However, as the reigning 100m world champion, she remains qualified for the event at the World Championships next month in Tokyo.
