Bangladesh’s star duo, Mustafizur Rahman and Rishad Hossain, have secured places in the final list of cricketers for the upcoming edition of The Hundred, set to take place in London on 12 March. Their selection marks a significant achievement for Bangladesh cricket, as the tournament draws top international and domestic talent.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) released a shortlist on Monday, 2 March, featuring 243 players from which the final roster will be chosen. From the 23 Bangladeshi players initially submitted, only Mustafizur and Rishad have made the final cut. Mustafizur, a left-arm fast bowler renowned for his pace and accuracy, is listed in the £100,000 category, while Rishad, a promising leg-spinner, is in the £75,000 bracket. Other notable Bangladeshi cricketers, including Najmul Hossain Shanto, Taskin Ahmed, Liton Das, and Towhid Hridoy, did not make the final list.
| Player | Role | Category | Fee (£) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mustafizur Rahman | Fast Bowler | Senior Overseas | 100,000 |
| Rishad Hossain | Leg Spinner | Senior Overseas | 75,000 |
The auction process will also feature marquee players, with ten names selected for special status. Among overseas marquee players are Haris Rauf, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Sunil Narine, and Daryl Mitchell. The domestic marquee list includes high-profile players such as Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow. These players are expected to attract significant attention from franchises during the auction and shape team strategies for the season.
Despite initial concerns over the participation of Pakistani cricketers—14 made the shortlist out of 710 registered players, amid rumours of informal restrictions due to IPL franchise affiliations—the ECB has clarified that selection will be strictly based on performance and team requirements. Analysts emphasise that meritocratic selection ensures competitive balance and maintains the integrity of the tournament.
The upcoming The Hundred season is scheduled to run from 21 July to 16 August, and for the first time, private investors have joined the tournament, bringing changes to team ownership structures. This has led to rebranding for three teams with connections to the Indian Premier League, reflecting the growing commercial influence on English domestic cricket.
Cricket enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the tournament, which promises a blend of explosive batting, sharp bowling, and innovative strategies unique to The Hundred’s 100-ball format. Mustafizur and Rishad’s inclusion is expected to enhance Bangladesh’s visibility on the international stage, offering them a platform to perform against some of the best cricketers worldwide.
With the auction finalised and marquee players confirmed, franchises are now preparing for tactical selections, while fans eagerly await the draft announcements and the start of what promises to be an exciting and commercially significant season of The Hundred.
