Riyad Admits Guilt in Gulshan Extortion Case

Abdur Razzaq Riyad, a suspended leader of the Bangladesh Democratic Student Federation, has confessed his guilt in court over charges of extortion in a case filed at Gulshan Police Station.

On Sunday (3 August), Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sefatullah of Dhaka recorded Riyad’s statement.

Background of the Case:

  • On 26 July at 00:30, complainant Siddique Abu Jafar filed an extortion case at Gulshan Police Station against six accused persons.
  • Accused include: Abdur Razzaq Riyad, Kazi Gourab Apu, Sakadawn Siam, Sadman Sadab, Md. Ibrahim Hossain, and the juvenile Md. Aminul Islam.
  • On 27 July, a seven-day remand was granted for the accused.
  • The juvenile accused, Md. Aminul Islam, was sent to the Gazipur Juvenile Development Centre.

Case Details as per FIR:

  • On 17 July at around 10:00 am, accused Riyad and Kazi Gourab Apu visited the residence of former reserved seat MP Shammi Ahmed at 83 Gulshan Road.
  • They allegedly demanded 5 million taka and gold ornaments, using threats and intimidation.
  • When the complainant expressed inability to pay, they allegedly branded him a supporter of the Awami League and threatened to have him arrested by the police.
  • Under pressure, Siddique Abu Jafar paid 1 million taka in cash—500,000 from himself and 500,000 from his brother

19 July, 10:30 pm Riyad and Apu forcibly entered complainant’s flat, banging loudly on the door; police were informed via mobile phone; accused fled.
26 July, 5:30 pm Riyad led other accused to the complainant’s home, demanding the remaining 4 million taka; threats of police arrest were made.
Same day Police were informed; Gulshan police arrested five accused on the spot; Kazi Gourab Apu escaped.

 

Riyad’s confession and the subsequent court actions highlight the ongoing investigation and crackdown on the extortion allegations linked to student political factions in Gulshan.
