Bangladesh strengthened their hopes of qualifying for the AFC U-17 Asian Cup as they secured a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Bahrain at the Yongchuan Sports Centre in China. With this triumph, the young Bangladesh side extended their winning streak to four matches in the Group ‘A’ qualifiers, putting themselves in a commanding position ahead of their crucial fixture against hosts China.
Earlier in the evening, China were scheduled to play their fourth match against Sri Lanka. Should they win, they would match Bangladesh’s 12 points, setting up a dramatic ‘winner-takes-all’ contest between the two sides on Sunday. The team finishing top of the group will earn a direct ticket to the AFC U-17 Asian Cup, set to be held in Saudi Arabia in May next year.

The match kicked off with Bangladesh immediately taking control of the tempo. Their forwards pressed relentlessly, attempting to break down Bahrain’s deep defensive structure. Bahrain, clearly aware of Bangladesh’s free-scoring form from previous matches, relied heavily on their backline to absorb the pressure.
Despite Bangladesh’s dominance, the first half saw several missed opportunities. Their forwards repeatedly broke into the final third, only to be denied by Bahrain’s compact defending and timely clearances. At times, frustration was evident among the Bangladeshi players as a breakthrough seemed just out of reach.
The second half delivered the action Bangladesh had been chasing. In the 59th minute, midfielder Baejid Bostami fired a precise shot into the back of the net, finally breaking the deadlock. The goal energised the entire team, and just minutes later, in the 72nd minute, Mohammad Manik doubled the lead with a composed finish.
With a 2–0 advantage, Bangladesh appeared to be cruising towards victory. However, Bahrain made things interesting when Zuhair Ibrahim scored in the 85th minute, injecting tension into the match. The final moments saw Bahrain push desperately for an equaliser, but the Bangladeshi defenders held firm, clearing two dangerous attacks during stoppage time.

The AFC U-17 Asian Cup will feature 16 teams, with nine already qualified and seven more to advance through the qualifiers. Bangladesh have previously featured twice at the U-17 level and four times at the U-16 stage, but have never progressed beyond the group phase.
This year, however, their performance has ignited renewed optimism. With four straight victories and an impressive goal tally, they now stand on the verge of making history—provided they can overcome China in their decisive final match.
