With the 2026 FIFA World Cup fast approaching, Mexico has unveiled an unconventional but increasingly common security measure: the deployment of quadrupedal “robot dogs” to support police operations around tournament venues. The announcement, made by local authorities on Monday, signals a broader push by the three co-hosts — Mexico, the United States and Canada — to integrate advanced technologies into public safety planning for one of the largest sporting events ever staged across three nations.
Designed to traverse hazardous or confined environments, the four-legged robots can enter derelict buildings, narrow corridors and poorly lit spaces that may pose risks to human officers. Each unit is equipped with live video transmission, allowing command teams to assess conditions remotely before officers move in. The stated aim is to reduce the likelihood of ambush, accidental injury or exposure to armed suspects during preliminary searches and security sweeps.
The initiative is being piloted in Guadalupe, a municipality on the outskirts of Monterrey, where the city council has invested approximately 2.5 million pesos in the acquisition of the robots — roughly equivalent to BDT 15 million. The area hosts a World Cup venue, making it a natural testing ground for new security protocols ahead of the tournament, which will run from 11 June to 19 July 2026. Monterrey’s BBVA Stadium is scheduled to stage four matches and will be known as Estadio Monterrey during the competition.
Footage released by the local government illustrates the robots’ capabilities in realistic scenarios. In one sequence, a robot dog navigates a partially collapsed stairwell inside an abandoned building, transmitting live images as police officers follow at a safe distance. In another, the device approaches an armed individual and uses an onboard loudspeaker to issue instructions to drop the weapon, demonstrating how remote engagement could de-escalate volatile situations before officers are exposed to direct danger.
Guadalupe’s mayor, Héctor García, said the technology is intended to support the earliest phases of police operations and to safeguard officers in potentially hostile environments. According to municipal officials, the robots will be deployed during high-risk searches, responses to armed incidents, and reconnaissance missions around major public gatherings linked to the World Cup. While not a replacement for human policing, the machines are expected to act as a first line of assessment in uncertain conditions.
Security planners argue that such tools could prove particularly valuable during the World Cup, when large crowds, international visitors and heightened media attention increase both the complexity and the stakes of public safety operations. Alongside robot-assisted patrols, authorities are expected to rely on integrated surveillance systems, real-time communications and coordinated cross-border planning among the three host nations.
Key Facts: Robot Dogs in World Cup Security

As preparations intensify, Mexican officials say the trial phase will help refine operational protocols and assess limitations, including battery life, mobility in dense crowds, and public perception. If successful, robot dogs may become a regular feature of security planning not only for the World Cup, but for future large-scale public events across the country.
