Rodrigo Out of World Cup After Knee Injury

Just over three months remain until the start of the FIFA World Cup, yet Brazilian football has already suffered a major blow. Real Madrid forward Rodrigo Goes has been ruled out for the remainder of the season and will miss the tournament after tearing his right knee’s anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and lateral meniscus.

Injury Details

Sources told ESPN that Rodrigo had been experiencing discomfort in his knee for several days. However, the injury occurred on Monday during an unexpected 1–0 defeat against Getafe in La Liga, effectively ending his hopes of representing Brazil at the World Cup, which begins on 11 June.

In a statement, Real Madrid confirmed: “Our Medical Services have completed thorough examinations of Rodrigo. Tests reveal a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament and lateral meniscus in his right knee.”

Rodrigo himself described the day on social media as one of the worst in his life. He wrote: “A huge obstacle has emerged in my career. I cannot do what I love most for several months. I will not play for my club for the rest of the season, nor will I be able to represent my country at the World Cup. This dream means everything to me. My focus now is to stay strong, as I always have.”

He added: “This is one of the worst days of my life. I have always feared this injury. Life may have been harsh on me lately… I do not know if I deserve this. But complaining will not help. I have had many beautiful moments in life, perhaps moments I was not fully worthy of.”

Close sources suggest Rodrigo could be sidelined for approximately eight months, with his return dependent on progress in rehabilitation and ongoing medical monitoring.

Response from Brazilian Football Federation

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) issued a statement expressing solidarity: “CBF sends its support to Real Madrid and Brazil forward Rodrigo Goes, who suffered a severe injury in the La Liga match against Getafe. He sustained tears to his ACL and lateral meniscus. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the pitch as soon as possible.”

Neymar’s Support

Brazilian captain Neymar, who suffered similar ACL and meniscus injuries in 2023, expressed sympathy on social media. The 34-year-old wrote: “My number 10, my son, my successor, I have only one request: stay strong. Surround yourself with loved ones. You will return to your best rhythm. I love you. Just as you have supported me, I will be by your side.”

Season Performance

Rodrigo played 27 matches for Real Madrid this season across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing six assists.

His absence represents a significant setback for Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti, who had included him in friendly matches in October and November, though Rodrigo missed the final four World Cup qualifiers last year. The injury not only affects his club campaign but also reshapes Brazil’s World Cup preparations.

This blow serves as a stark reminder of football’s physical demands and the mental resilience required to overcome such career-altering setbacks.
