Rohingya refugees have urged Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus to help expedite their return to their homeland in Myanmar, emphasizing that they do not want to remain a burden on Bangladesh.
The appeal came during an iftar event at a Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar, where UN Secretary-General António Guterres accompanied Prof. Yunus to meet with members of the displaced community.
During the gathering, several Rohingya refugees voiced their desire to return home, telling the Chief Adviser: “We have land there. We can make a living. We came here because we were not allowed to stay in our own country. We do not want to be a burden to anyone.”
They urged the Chief Adviser to persuade the Myanmar authorities to repatriate them as soon as possible.
In response, Prof. Yunus acknowledged their concerns and reiterated their message to the global community.
“They [the Rohingyas] want the world to hear their plea,” he said.
Addressing the Rohingya refugees, Prof. Yunus highlighted the significance of UN Secretary-General Guterres’ visit, emphasizing his commitment to finding a solution.
“Despite so many crises around the world, including wars in different regions, the UN secretary-general has come here just to listen to you. He has traveled from afar solely to break fast with you so that a solution can be found. For this, we all express our gratitude to him.”
The Chief Adviser thanked those involved in organizing the event and sought prayers for a swift resolution to the crisis.
