Cristiano Ronaldo has decided to end his brief boycott and will return to play for Saudi club Al-Nassr after missing two matches. According to sources cited by ESPN Brazil, the 41-year-old superstar is expected to feature in Al-Nassr’s upcoming fixture against Al-Fateh on 14 February.
The Portuguese forward’s boycott had been sparked by frustrations with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia, which oversees the nation’s four major clubs. Ronaldo alleged that the fund was giving preferential treatment to rival clubs, particularly Al-Hilal, at the expense of Al-Nassr. In protest, he withdrew from Al-Nassr’s squad for matches against Al-Ittihad and Al-Riyadh.
ESPN reports that the PIF took steps to address Ronaldo’s concerns, paving the way for his return. The fund cleared Al-Nassr’s outstanding wages and restored managerial autonomy to the club’s senior executives. Sporting Director Simao Coutinho and CEO José Semedo, who had been temporarily suspended by the PIF, are now back in their respective roles.
Earlier, the Saudi Pro League had issued a statement warning that players do not have the authority to influence club decisions externally. The league emphasised that “each club is independently managed under the same set of rules. Every club has its own board, executive team, and football leadership. Decisions on player recruitment, expenditures, and strategy fall within the club’s remit, ensuring a sustainable and competitive balance, uniformly across the league.”
Ronaldo has had an impressive season so far. In 22 appearances, he has scored 18 goals and contributed three assists. Al-Nassr currently sit second in the Saudi Pro League, just one point behind their perennial rivals Al-Hilal, reflecting the tight competition at the top of the table.
| Player | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Club Position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cristiano Ronaldo | 22 | 18 | 3 | 2nd (Al-Nassr) |
The decision marks a significant development in the Saudi football scene, highlighting the delicate balance between player influence and club governance. Ronaldo’s return not only strengthens Al-Nassr’s title challenge but also reassures fans of the club’s commitment to retaining one of football’s most iconic figures.
With the league entering a critical phase, all eyes will be on Ronaldo as he resumes his role at Al-Nassr, potentially playing a decisive part in the title race against Al-Hilal.
