Cristiano Ronaldo was front and centre at a spectacular White House banquet hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday night. The dinner was held in honour of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and attracted an impressive roster of guests, including high-profile politicians and global business leaders such as Tim Cook and Elon Musk.
Seated at the very front of the East Room, Ronaldo was ideally positioned to witness Trump and the Crown Prince deliver speeches. The president singled him out, revealing a personal connection: he had introduced the football superstar to his 19-year-old son, Barron.
“Barron is a huge fan of Ronaldo,” Trump explained from the podium. “He wants to be wherever Ronaldo is. Today, he got to meet him in person, and I think that makes me look a little cooler in his eyes.”
Ronaldo’s interaction with Trump goes beyond this dinner. Earlier this year, he gifted the former president a signed football shirt, presented through Portugal’s former Prime Minister António Costa. Ronaldo has praised Trump publicly, calling him “someone who can effect or help bring about change in the world.”
The visit also carries political weight. Since the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, U.S.-Saudi relations had been strained, with Prince Mohammed avoiding long trips to the United States. Intelligence agencies reportedly believe the prince authorised the operation, though he has denied any involvement.
For Ronaldo, it was a rare trip back to the U.S., where he last played in 2014. But the football star will soon return, with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon. The group-stage draw will be held on 5 December at Washington’s Kennedy Centre, an event Trump is expected to attend, highlighting his enthusiasm for the tournament.
