Ronaldo remains steadfast in boycott, likelihood of leaving Al Nassr increases

Cristiano Ronaldo’s situation at Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr remains unsettled, with the Portuguese superstar showing no signs of softening his stance over consecutive match boycotts. The ongoing unrest stems from his dissatisfaction with the club’s management and the perceived role of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) in decision-making.

According to ESPN, unless the PIF provides clear assurances regarding managerial and operational changes in the coming weeks, Ronaldo may formally request a departure from Al-Nassr at the end of the current season in June.

Ronaldo’s grievance revolves around the PIF’s alleged preferential treatment of rival clubs, particularly Al-Hilal, over Al-Nassr. He claims that PIF support has tilted financial advantages towards Al-Hilal, creating an uneven playing field within the league.

In a related development, Ronaldo reportedly intervened to prevent a potential transfer of Karim Benzema from Al-Ittihad to Al-Hilal, arguing that the move would further strengthen Al-Hilal’s title ambitions. Despite his efforts, Benzema signed for Al-Hilal immediately after Al-Nassr’s 1–0 league victory over Al-Riyadh, a match Ronaldo himself boycotted.

Ronaldo’s discontent has also been fuelled by recent internal restructuring at Al-Nassr. Last month, the board reduced the powers of Sporting Director Simao Coutinho and CEO José Semedo, decisions that reportedly frustrated Ronaldo. Additionally, cost-cutting measures have limited the club’s ability to recruit top-tier players. Meanwhile, Al-Hilal has received significant financial backing from Saudi Crown Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, funding all of the club’s signings during the current transfer window, including Benzema.

Ronaldo has made it clear that his return to the pitch depends on two conditions: the restoration of managerial authority within Al-Nassr and guarantees that no future transfer window will involve similar interventions.

Since joining Al-Nassr in 2022, Ronaldo has yet to secure a major trophy with the club. Last summer, he renewed his contract until June 2027, which includes a €50 million release clause. With Al-Nassr set to face Al-Ittihad this Friday, his participation remains uncertain.
