Rower Rescued from Path of Tropical Cyclone Off Australia

SYDNEY, 3 March 2025 (BSS/AFP) – A Lithuanian rower has been rescued from treacherous seas off the coast of Australia after inadvertently paddling into a tropical cyclone while attempting a solo crossing of the Pacific Ocean.

An Australian naval vessel retrieved long-distance rower Aurimas Mockus from the Coral Sea, where Tropical Cyclone Alfred was unleashing winds of up to 100 kilometres (60 miles) per hour and generating seven-metre (20-foot) swells on Monday.

Mockus first activated his emergency beacon on Friday evening, enduring three perilous nights at sea as the intensifying cyclone delayed rescue operations.

Vice Admiral Justin Jones confirmed that Mockus—who had been using his journey to raise awareness and support for Ukraine’s war effort—was safely on board and undergoing medical assessments.

“The ship is en route back to Australian shores,” the Australian Maritime Safety Authority announced in a statement.

Aerial images captured before the rescue depicted his modified rowboat being tossed about by white-capped waves in the churning, dark waters.

Mockus was forced to abandon his ambitious goal of rowing 12,000 kilometres (7,500 miles) across the Pacific Ocean from the United States to Australia. He had embarked on the arduous expedition in September last year, according to his website.

Tropical Cyclone Alfred is expected to generate hazardous waves and strong winds as it approaches Australia’s eastern coastline later this week, the national weather bureau has warned.

Additional Context:

Mockus joins a select group of extreme endurance rowers who have attempted transoceanic crossings, often braving unpredictable weather, equipment failures, and physical exhaustion. His journey is reminiscent of other historic solo rowing efforts, such as those by British adventurer Roz Savage and Norwegian explorer Stein Hoff, both of whom undertook similar feats in pursuit of personal challenge and global awareness campaigns.

Australia’s Coral Sea, where Mockus was rescued, is infamous for its volatile weather conditions, particularly during cyclone season. Cyclone Alfred’s rapid intensification underscores the dangers faced by adventurers navigating the region, as well as the critical role of maritime safety authorities in conducting high-risk rescues.
