Russia Dismisses Macron’s Address as ‘Detached from Reality’

MOSCOW, 6 March 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Russia on Thursday criticised French President Emmanuel Macron over his recent address in which he suggested the possibility of extending France’s nuclear umbrella to European allies.

In his speech to the French nation on Wednesday, Macron described Russia as a “threat to France and Europe” and warned of growing uncertainty regarding the United States’ stance on the Ukraine conflict, particularly under President Donald Trump’s administration. He argued that the French people were “legitimately worried” about Washington’s shifting position.

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova dismissed Macron’s remarks, accusing him of making “absolutely contradictory statements” that were “detached from reality”.

Comparing Macron to Ole Lukoje, a character from a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale who shields sleeping children with umbrellas, Zakharova mocked his proposal. “I listened to all this, looked at him, and realised who he reminds me of—the nuclear Ole Lukoje,” she said.

Macron’s comments followed a phone conversation with Friedrich Merz, who is widely expected to become Germany’s next chancellor, during which they discussed the prospect of extending France’s nuclear deterrent to other European nations.

Additional Context:
France is the only nuclear-armed state in the European Union, following the United Kingdom’s departure. Macron’s suggestion of a shared nuclear defence reflects broader concerns about Europe’s security in the face of an assertive Russia and uncertainty over US commitments to NATO. His remarks come amid increasing debate on European strategic autonomy, with some leaders pushing for greater defence cooperation within the EU.
