In a devastating escalation of hostilities targeting civilian infrastructure, a Russian drone strike has claimed the lives of at least twelve energy sector employees in south-eastern Ukraine. The attack occurred on Sunday in the Dnipropetrovsk region, intercepting a bus transporting miners as they returned from their shift.
Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed the casualties via a statement on Telegram, condemning the strike as a “contemptible act of terror.” According to ministerial reports, the bus was struck near the town of Ternivka. In addition to the twelve confirmed fatalities, seven other workers sustained significant injuries and are currently receiving emergency medical treatment.
The energy conglomerate DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy provider, released a sombre statement confirming that the victims were their personnel. The company noted that the employees were targeted during their transit from the mines, highlighting the increasing risks faced by those maintaining the nation’s fragile energy grid.
The strike in Dnipropetrovsk was part of a broader wave of aerial assaults across the region. Earlier on Sunday, local officials in Zaporizhzhia reported that Russian strikes had damaged a maternity hospital and a residential complex, resulting in at least nine injuries.
These incidents coincide with a period of intense Russian pressure on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. With the war entering its fourth year, the systematic targeting of power and mining facilities has left millions of civilians struggling with heating and electricity shortages during the harsh winter months.
The timing of this tragedy is particularly sensitive as international mediators attempt to broker a ceasefire. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Sunday that a second round of high-level tripartite talks between officials from the United States, Russia, and Ukraine is scheduled to take place this coming Wednesday and Thursday in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
| Event Location | Nature of Incident | Reported Casualties |
|---|---|---|
| Ternivka, Dnipro | Drone strike on mining bus | 12 Dead, 7 Injured |
| Zaporizhzhia | Missile strike on maternity hospital | 9 Injured |
| National Grid | Systematic infrastructure sabotage | Widespread power outages |
The United States has reportedly been increasing diplomatic pressure on Kyiv to find a negotiated settlement to the conflict. However, continued strikes on non-combatant targets like the DTEK bus service suggest that a breakthrough in the UAE may remain elusive as both sides harden their positions ahead of the summit.
