Gazipur, Bangladesh: In a startling case of judicial deception, a 30-year-old man, Saiful Islam, has been imprisoned in place of the actual accused, Sattar Mia, for a mere BDT 15,000. The real culprit, Sattar Mia, remains at large in the local community despite a court order directing his detention in connection with a case filed by the Forest Department.
Saiful and Sattar hail from the same village, Mothajuri Talchala, in Kaliakoir Upazila. According to local residents, Sattar’s associates coerced Saiful with financial inducements to submit legal documents and surrender to the court on Sattar’s behalf, allowing the true accused to avoid incarceration.
On 9 September, Forest Department officials apprehended several individuals illegally cutting government trees in the Fulbaria (or Kachighata) range. While some suspects escaped, a formal case was registered against those involved. On 7 December, Sattar Mia appeared in court, and the judge ordered his detention. However, a field investigation revealed that Sattar was freely moving around his locality, claiming he was attending personal matters in Mawa, despite the court’s mandate.
Saiful Islam is currently listed in Gazipur District Jail records under the name “Sattar”. The ruse was uncovered only after photo verification and biometric checks, revealing that the person behind bars was actually Saiful, acting as a “rented accused.” Saiful’s father, Rahim Badsha, confirmed:
“He went to court on Sattar’s behalf after being promised bail, receiving BDT 15,000 in return.”

Forest Range Officer Sharif Khan explained, “We were powerless in the face of local intimidation, so we seized the evidence and filed the case.” Meanwhile, Jail Superintendent Mohammad Rafiqul Qader told journalists,
“Saiful claimed to be Sattar during entry, so we did not suspect him initially. Biometric checks later revealed the truth. The court has been notified.”
The revelation has sparked widespread concern in the locality, highlighting the serious social and judicial implications of ‘rented accused’ schemes. Locals argue that the incident raises deep questions about the integrity of legal processes and the ease with which money can be used to manipulate court proceedings.
This case has ignited calls for stricter verification procedures to ensure that the right individuals face justice, and to prevent further exploitation of vulnerable citizens in such arrangements.
