Mohamed Salah’s departure from Liverpool’s Anfield seemed imminent, but in a dramatic twist, the Egyptian star signed a new contract with the Reds last season. Following this, Salah scored 29 goals and contributed 18 assists, helping Liverpool secure the Premier League title. This achievement has now earned him the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year award for a record third time.
The award was presented yesterday (Tuesday) in Manchester, with Salah surpassing six previous multiple-time winners, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, and Gareth Bale, who each won the award twice. Salah had previously received the highest votes for this award in 2018 and 2022. Reacting to the honour, the 33-year-old forward said: “Looking at myself now, coming from Egypt and playing at the highest level, I have made history. This is something that fills me with pride.”
PFA Team of the Year Dominated by Liverpool
Liverpool’s dominance extends to the PFA Team of the Year, with several players from Jürgen Klopp’s squad receiving recognition:
| Player | Club | Position |
| Mohamed Salah | Liverpool | Forward |
| Alexis Mac Allister | Liverpool | Midfield |
| Virgil van Dijk | Liverpool | Defence |
| Ryan Gravenberch | Liverpool | Midfield |
Notably, no Manchester City player made the PFA Team of the Year for the first time since 2017, reflecting a challenging season under Pep Guardiola.
In women’s football, Arsenal’s Spanish midfielder Mariona Caldentey was awarded PFA Women’s Player of the Year. In her first season at the club, she scored 19 goals, won the Champions League trophy (losing the final against her former club Barcelona), and reached the European Championship final with Spain, though they were defeated by England.
The PFA Young Player of the Year awards went to:
| Player | Club | Category | Stats / Notes |
| Morgan Rogers | Aston Villa | Men’s Young Player | Turned 23 last month; scored 14 goals in 54 matches for Villa last season |
| Olivia Smith | Arsenal | Women’s Young Player | Joined Arsenal for a record transfer fee from Liverpool; scored 7 goals in 20 matches |
Rogers has been a rising star for Aston Villa and the England national team, while Smith set a world record transfer in women’s football, making an immediate impact for Arsenal.
