Saudi Arabia Issues New Umrah Guidelines for Ramadan

As the holy month of Ramadan unfolds, Saudi Arabian authorities have issued a comprehensive set of guidelines aimed at ensuring the safety, order, and uninterrupted worship of pilgrims performing Umrah. With the Grand Mosque in Makkah experiencing a significant increase in footfall, the directives are designed to manage crowd density, reduce traffic congestion, and strengthen health and safety measures.

Officials highlighted that peak crowding occurs before and after prayers in the central areas of the mosque. To address this, pilgrims are urged to follow designated pathways and adhere to the guidance provided by clearly marked signboards. Security personnel will assist with access and movement, while a digital signalling system will provide real-time updates on crowd status. A green signal indicates available space, whereas red signifies that the area is full.

To mitigate traffic congestion, the use of private vehicles has been restricted. Pilgrims are strongly encouraged to use buses, taxis, and the Haramain High-Speed Railway for transport. Motorcycles, bicycles, and other unauthorized vehicles are strictly prohibited in the central areas to maintain smooth movement and prevent bottlenecks.

Special provisions have been made for elderly pilgrims and those with disabilities, including designated prayer areas and electric carts for easier mobility. Parents are advised not to bring children into densely crowded zones to reduce risk.

Authorities also emphasise the importance of water conservation, adequate rest, fire safety, and strict adherence to hygiene protocols. Digital permits are mandatory for all pilgrims. Additionally, carrying weapons, begging, selling unauthorized goods, and any actions that obstruct movement are strictly forbidden.
